Day 10: Insula to Lake 4

Thursday, June 24, 2004

9 miles, 4 portages, 165 rods

I woke up at 6 AM, ready to get up but stayed in my sleeping bag just thinking and reflecting for an hour. At 7 I got up and made a pancake breakfast complete with rehydrated maple syrup for Jason who was feeling under the weather. Rather than starting out on a rainy paddle we hung out in camp talking and resting until 2 when Jason started feeling better. It was sunny and relatively calm day, which enabled us to talk some of the time. The lakes were beautiful but notoriously difficult to navigate, and I fortunately only made one small mistake. There were lots of fishermen out, but none of them were catching very much. The sky was really beautiful much of the day, and the temperature was lovely.

We found a sweet camping spot on Lake 4 with a nice breeze to blow all of the mosquitoes away from us. It was a deluxe-sized camp spot with lots of room and plenty of fishing lures to take back to Homeplace as well as an only slightly broken pocketknife—great BW Booty to add to the collection. We had fantastic red spaghetti for dinner and hot cocoa before heading to bed.

Another great view.
