15 miles, 8 portages, 245 rods We ate as much of the leftover Voyageur Stew as we could without getting sick this morning and then headed out onto the Kawish, which we stayed on until the end of the night. It was mostly cloudy, but not too much rain. We were definitely smelling the barn and wanted to make it all the way to Homeplace that night. Because of this we were consistent and focused in our paddling, but not too talkative, and we didn’t see too many exciting animals or sights. The portages were sometimes rocky and difficult, but we pushed through. Lunch consisted of eating all of the good things left in our food bag—the last of the M&Ms, fig newtons, and mining the GORP for the good stuff. We didn’t have too many head winds, and on the open area where I’ve always had head winds they were absent. I made a mistake in my navigation, thinking that HP was further down the river than it actually was. I saw some docks that looked awfully familiar, and realized we were home about 2-3 miles earlier than I had predicted. It was refreshing to pull in back home, eat lots of salad for dinner, and take showers. A great ending to a challenging and fun trip. |
