Day 4: Windy Tuscadora

No progress (rest day)

We woke up to strong winds all around us. Stepping out to the campsite there were white caps on the water and heavy currents from the direction we needed to travel. After looking at the maps and discovering we only have ~75 miles we had to travel in the next 10 days, we decided to wait out the wind. Its now 3:45 PM and we’re still here. We’ve been visited by ruffled seagulls and a bald eagle that flew low down and right over out head. I took the time to explain Outward Bound structure and some Voyageur lore to Jason and we both have read our books. Great relaxation. Unfortunately we left our cards and cribbage back at OB so we’re left to our own devices for entertainment. There is always Sparky, who appears to have become a third entity on this trip. We read his musing on mosquitoes, black flies, and Gray Jays (camp robbers). Sparky, knowledgeable but always controversial, suggests letting a mosquito bite you to observe the feeding process closely, and trying to feel a camp robber from your hand—not very Leave No Trace.

About 2 PM the canoe took flight from its resting spot and landed about 10 feet away on rock and then in the water. Quick-thinking Jason ran into the water with all his clothes on and caught it before it got too far. We’re lucky it’s still intact! I was very scared it would have an enormous hole and we’d have to bushwhack and swim the rest of our way home. We stashed the canoe in next to out tent after that and spent the rest of the day chillin’ in the crib. The mac and cheese was disappointing, and we went to bed early for an early rise.
