Day 2: Driving to Monteverde

Saturday, March 11, 2006

We got up and out of town as soon as we could—waylaid significantly by the one-way streets. It reminded me of my younger days trying to navigate walled cities in France with my parents, only in Spanish this time. We drove 3½ hours to Monteverde on increasingly bumpy and dusty roads with beautiful vistas of the Pacific, cloud-forest terrain, and attractive long-horned cows. We stopped for unusual fresh fruit including cashew fruit and others we can’t remember, but concluded that mangoes were still our favorite, and that apples would win out over most of them too. That afternoon we went to the Children’s Cloud Forest that was bought by donations from children from around the world. We hiked at dusk and saw some interesting birds we couldn’t identify; including some that looked and sounded like grouse. That night we slept a lot because unfortunately both of us had colds.
