Day 3: Upper Florence Lake

Tuesday, October 2, 2001

This was an easy day with no no backpacking. We climbed Snowgrass Mountain to the 7500 foot mark. An easy scramble up rocks and meadows. The rock was very rotted and steep beyond this point so we decided we'd come far enough. We had a wonderful 360° view, the entire landscape revealed to us for many miles in every direction. I tried out the panoramic feature of my camera; very cool though I later regretted using up so much battery power toying around with this. Looking down at our campsite was awesome. The wind was blowing at a good clip and we cooled off fast after we stopped climbing, despite the warm sun.

That afternoon we braved the icy waters of the lake. Forget refreshment: this was a purely functional cleaning experience. The water was so cold that I doubt a sailor could scrub and get out faster than we did. Of course, it took a good 15 minutes to work up the courage to get in.

The sunset was especially beautiful, cycling the clouds through yellow, orange, red and pink. What a great day!

Beautiful fall colors filled the meadows.
